Picture

TTU Mariachi Los Matadores

As an academic mariachi program, the group focuses on a wide variety of styles within the mariachi tradition.  The students in the group represent a wide-variety of majors and demonstrates the importance of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) approach to learning. Additionally, the group comprises students from Lubbock High School, South Plains College, as well as Texas Tech students’ ranging from freshman to doctoral students. It is the aim that this program represents a true pipeline in which mariachi music is a pathway to higher education through recruitment and retention.

Along with sectionals and regular rehearsals, this ensemble also has master classes and a summer camp with
Jesus “Chuy" Guzman, the musical director of Mariachi Los Camperos De Nati Cano.

Zydeco

"Zydeco (/ˈzaɪdɪˌkoʊ/ ZY-dih-koh or /ˈzaɪdiˌkoʊ/ ZY-dee-koh, French: Zarico) is a music genre that evolved in southwest Louisiana by French Creole speakers[1] which blends blues, rhythm and blues, and music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles and the Native people of Louisiana. Though distinct in origin from the Cajun music of Louisiana, the two forms influenced each other, forming a complex of genres native to Louisiana." (Wikipedia)
