WORLD MUSIC CERTIFICATE

Summary:

The TTU School of Music, under the general supervision of the Vernacular Music Center, offers an undergraduate Certificate in World Music, beginning Fall 2011. Appears as part of official Academic Transcript, signifying special expertise in the topic. Open to all undergraduates; employs 15-credit hour curriculum combining required core courses, electives, and ensembles.

Rationale:

For most music scholars involved in teaching or research, there is an expectation of familiarity with global music styles. Those interested in advanced degrees will find material advantage through this undergraduate certificate study. Those involved in K-12 education will be greatly facilitated in meeting global music and cultural diversity requirements. Admission to TTU SOM will be deemed sufficient prerequisite skills. We anticipate 6-8 enrollees per year initially. Study of job postings, curriculum descriptions, certification requirements, and professional discourse confirms the value and immediate positive impact of this certificate.

The Certificate compliments existing degree programs in Music Education, Music Composition, Performance, and the Bachelor of Arts. It joins the existing Upper-level Undergraduate Certificate in Jazz Studies; Graduate Certificate in Early Music; and Graduate Certificate in Piano Pedagogy.
