CERTIFICATE IN INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY ARTS
Summary:
The TTU School of Music, under the general supervision of the Vernacular Music Center, offers an undergraduate Certificate in Introduction to Community Arts, beginning Fall 2013. Appears as part of official Academic Transcript, signifying special expertise in the topic. Open to all undergraduates; employs 15-credit hour curriculum combining required core courses and electives. Makes extensive use of Service Learning components (at least 2 SL projects required). Includes Capstone Project. Particularly aimed at practitioners/participants in community arts, but also open to non-Certificate students in performance tracks.
Rationale:
For most working artist/educators, it is valuable, on behalf of both one’s own career and also artistic & creative campus and community projects, to develop strong skills in management, budgeting, promotions, and media. Those interested in advanced degrees (as for example the Master’s or PhD in Arts Administration) will find material advantage through this foundational undergraduate certificate study. Those involved in K-12 education will be greatly facilitated in speaking and advocating on behalf of their program initiatives. Admission to TTU CVPA will be deemed sufficient prerequisite skills. We anticipate 6-8 enrollees per year initially. Study of job postings, curriculum descriptions, certification requirements, and professional discourse confirms the value and immediate positive impact of this certificate.
The Certificate complements existing degree programs at the Master’s and PhD level. It joins the existing Upper-level Undergraduate Certificate in Jazz Studies; Undergraduate Certificate in World Music; Graduate Certificate in Early Music; and Graduate Certificate in Piano Pedagogy.
Admission to candidacy is confirmed by completion of the ‘Certificate Program’ form, with signature from the Certificate’s supervising faculty member, to be kept on file by the Undergraduate Adviser via SharePoint.
